Donald Dean Kraus

August 2, 1945 ~ November 25, 2018 (age 73)

Alta Vista - Donald (Doughboy) Dean Kraus, 73, of Alta Vista, KS, passed away, Sunday, November 25 at Morris County Hospital.

He was born on the family farm in “Old Germany Community” in Wabaunsee County Kansas, the son of Royal and Stella (Sherrer) Kraus. Don attended South Pole Rural School, a one room school house, through the sixth grade and graduated from Alta Vista High School in 1963.  Don joined the National Guard in 1966 and was drafted by the US Army in 1968.  He was honorably discharged in 1972.

He was married and divorced and from that union they had two sons, Corey (Christa) and Darin (Teresa).

Don retired at an early age, due to health issues. He worked many years in concrete construction.  He enjoyed various activities such as hunting, fishing, spending time with his dog “Phagus”, gardening, and going to auctions.  He also spent countless hours tinkering and ‘fixing’ things with black electrical tape and whatever resources he had on hand.  He grew up loving and playing the game of softball and played until his body would no longer allow it.  He was an avid KU fan and could spend hours a day watching old western movies.

Don was preceded in death by his parents Roy and Sally, his brother Butch, and twin brother Ron.  Survivors include his two sons: Corey Kraus and wife Christa- Alta Vista, Kansas and Darin Kraus and wife Teresa- Sioux City, Iowa;  sister, Deloris Ashburn (The Warden) and husband R.L. Ashburn. Also surviving are sisters-in-law Beverly Kraus and Linda Kraus;  grandchildren, Taylor Litke and husband Neil, Cortney Miller, Zachary Kraus, Chloe Kraus, and Bo Kraus; great grandchild Charlee Chaney and several nieces and nephews.

Upon Don’s wishes, he was cremated and the family is planning a private graveside service to be held at a later date.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Kraus family.
