Vaughn Steere

Council Grove - Vaughn Wayne Steere, 63, lifelong resident of Council Grove, Kansas, passed away at his residence Tuesday, November 14, 2017.

He was born September 30, 1954 to Frank Loren and Delores E. (Hewitt) Steere in Council Grove.  He graduated from Council Grove High School in 1972.  He married Jane Lee in 1975 and they had two children, Michael Vaughn Steere and Alice Marie Steere.  They later divorced and Vaughn married Toni Kay Lachenmeier in Hardin, Montana and later divorced. Together they had a daughter Vanessa Renae.

Vaughn worked in construction his entire life.  After graduation, he began working at Neosho Construction.  In the mid 1980’s, he returned to Council Grove and served as the Superintendent of the Street Department.  In the 90’s Vaughn opened his own business, Longhorn Construction and ran it for several years.  After selling it, he returned to work for the Hutchinson family, until his retirement in 2012.

Vaughn loved the outdoors.  He enjoyed hunting, fishing and boating with his family and passed the love of these on to them.  He spent time restoring antique vehicles.  Vaughn also was an avid lover of Nascar.  He cherished his time with his two grandchildren.

 Vaughn was preceded in death by his father and two sisters, Joni Kay Steere and Brandi Jo Steere.

He is survived by his mother, Delores Steere, of Council Grove; his son, Michael Vaughn Steere and wife Tracy, of Talkeetna, AK; his daughters, Alice Marie Steere, of Eagle River, AK and Vanessa Renae Manbeck and husband Cole, of Olathe, KS; grandchildren Isabella Jane Bond and Brody Vaughn Manbeck.  He is also survived by his brothers Rodney L. Steere, of Washington State and Patrick T. Steere and wife Christine, of Olathe, KS; sisters Lori A. Fore and husband Jeff, of Council Grove, KS and Kristi L. Finn and husband Tom, of Brookstone, MN;  aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews, and a host of friends.  He will be sadly missed by all.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, November 18, 2017, at Zeiner Funeral Home Chapel.  A visitation for family and friends will be from 6:00 to 7:30 P.M., Friday, November 17th, also at Zeiner Funeral Home.  A private family burial will follow at a later date.
