Paul Worthy Thompson

December 5, 1922 ~ March 5, 2018 (age 95)

Council Grove - Paul Worthy Thompson, 95 of Council Grove, Kansas passed away March 5, 2018, at Morris County Hospital.

He was born December 5, 1922, the son of Riley and Carrie (Kitterman) Thompson in Larned, Kansas.  Paul married Betty Lou Beason on June 24, 1945.  He joined the US Army in September 1946, served in World War II and was honorably discharged in April 1947. He worked at Boeing Aircraft in Quality Control and NASA as a Lead Inspector.

Paul was a member of Council Grove/Dunlap United Methodist Church, Council Grove Country Club, American Legion and VFW.

Paul’s family and love of God were his top priorities.  He worked with the youth for many years at Wesley United Methodist Church in Wichita.  His faithfulness and witness were a source of inspiration to many.  He was a master carpenter/handyman who loved sharing his creations.  There didn’t seem to be anything he couldn’t do with wood, as he even designed and built a spec house on the Council Grove City Lake.  He has instilled patience and a love of gardening in his daughter, Janet.  Nothing was better than his fresh picked corn and tomatoes from the garden. He loved camping, fishing and traveling with friends and family.  He was the best ski boat driver and patiently taught his kids and granddaughter, Kim, to ski.  He was an avid WSU basketball fan.  He and Betty Lou had season tickets for many years and enjoyed following the team.  Golfing became his passion in his later years and he was the oldest active golfer at the Council Grove Country Club by 2016.  Paul especially enjoyed golfing with his son, Dan.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers, Wayne and Eugene.

Paul is survived by his loving wife, Betty Lou, of the home in Council Grove, daughter Janet Grieve and husband Tom, of Wichita; son Daniel Thompson, of Huntington Beach, CA; grandchildren, Kimberly Melzer and husband Curt, of Wichita, Siera Thompson and Jake Thompson, both of Huntington Beach, CA; and great-granddaughter Madilyn Melzer.

Paul will be sadly missed by all.

At his request, Paul’s body has been donated to KU School of Medicine for teaching or research purposes.

A memorial service for Paul will be held at 11:00, Monday, March 12, 2018, at Council Grove/Dunlap United Methodist Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Council Grove/Dunlap United Methodist Church.  They may be sent in care of Zeiner Funeral Home, PO Box 273, Council Grove, KS 66846.
